Martin Vlček
Polenoc was started in 1999 by Martin Vlček. It is a limited run journal which publishes short stories and poetry, as well as photography and visual art. It is self-published, so the means of production would need to be very simple. These limitations actually pose very interesting design problems. Martin also wished to include photography in a limited few, so a color insert page that could be produced independently would also be needed.
We chose a format that could be derived from a3. This meant that the printing costs would be lower, while maintaining a very high aesthetic proportion of the page. Everything was designed using only black ink. For an accent color we decided to use a normal office variety highlighter, making a reference to the writer's daytime professions (mostly in offices). The headline typography is created using a permanent marker and a stencil set, also commonly found in offices. We felt that by using normal materials and techniques in a sophisticated way, mirrored the content of the book very well.
